Joist Hangers
Concealed Joist Hanger for 2x4 to 10x12 Joists
A concealed joist hanger carries the end of a joist or beam where it meets a header, a ledger, or a wall at a right angle, with its mounting flanges hidden. The flanges sit within the joist's width, behind its end, so all you see is the steel along the joist's sides. Set your joist's size below, and it's made to fit. Also called an internal flange joist hanger.

01 Details
How it goes in
The hanger bolts to the header first, through the flanges inside its pocket. The joist then goes in over them. Because the bolt heads or nuts stand inside the pocket, the end of the joist is grooved or notched to clear them. Plan that cut before you order.
Concealed or face-mount
Choose concealed for the cleaner look: no steel shows on the header at all. The price is the groove in the joist's end and more work to install. If you'd rather skip both, the face-mount joist hanger puts its flanges on the header's face, where the fasteners are easy to reach.
What you set, and what follows from it
You set four sizes. The joist's width, which the configurator calls the width of beam, runs from 1 1/2" to 10". The hanger's height runs from 3 1/2" to 12". Together they cover 2x4 to 10x12. The beam flanges along the joist's sides run from 2 1/2" to 5" wide. Fasteners run from 1/4" to 5/8". You also choose a straight or an angled saddle, the seat under the joist. That choice is only for looks.
The mounting flanges aren't yours to set, because they have to fit inside the pocket:
- A joist up to 2 7/8" wide gets one mounting flange, as wide as the pocket.
- A joist from 3" up gets two flanges, each 1 1/2" wide.
- From 4" up, the two flanges are 2" wide.
The pocket itself is 1/16" wider than your joist. The configurator opens on a 4" joist in a hanger 7" tall, with 2 1/2" beam flanges and 3/8" fasteners.
Where the holes are
Each mounting flange has its holes down its centerline, and each beam flange has them 1" from its free edge. A flange gets two holes, one high and one low, plus a third in the middle when the hanger is taller than 6". None of the sizes limits another here, so the configurator has no spacing rule to enforce.
Questions
How big does the groove in the joist need to be?
Big enough to clear whatever stands proud of the mounting flanges: the bolt heads or nuts, and any washers. That depends on your fasteners, so pick them first and measure them.
Does any steel still show?
Yes. The two beam flanges show along the joist's sides, with their fasteners, and the seat shows underneath. Only the mounting flanges and their fasteners are out of sight.
What if my joist is wider than 10"?
Use the quote form to send the joist's size and how it meets the header. We make custom hangers from plans, and there's no charge for the design.
The basics
- 3/16" A36 steel plate, laser cut and welded in our ISO 9001 shop in Texas.
- Holes are cut 1/16" larger than the fastener you choose. Fasteners aren't included.
- Enter your timber's real size, not its name. How to measure a timber.
- Bare steel, or matte black powder coat added in the cart.
