Awning Brackets and Tie Rod Supports

Steel awning brackets and tie rod supports for storefront canopies, door canopies, porch roofs and timber awnings. Each support is a steel rod running from a bracket on the wall above down to a bracket on the canopy, holding it up in tension, with no posts underneath. We manufacture complete awning support systems in Texas, made to your measurements.

Design your awning system

What goes into each support

  • Wall bracket: a heavy-duty steel bracket that mounts to the wall above the awning.
  • Canopy bracket: a steel bracket on the awning's beam or frame.
  • Tie rod: 1/2", 3/4" or 1" steel rod, pinned to both brackets with clevises, so it sits at whatever angle your design calls for.
  • Turnbuckle (optional): 6" of take-up for tensioning and leveling the awning after it's installed.

Our steel awning brackets come in three face-mount shapes: round (3 1/16" across), square (4" × 4") and rectangular (1 1/2" × 6"). You can also use your own brackets, or have us build to your architect's bracket design.

Finishes

Every part ships as unfinished steel, or in our matte black powder coat, a durable finish suited to outdoor awnings. Add powder coating in the cart. For coastal or very wet locations, we also offer galvanizing by quote: request a quote and we'll price it for your project. Galvanizing adds to the lead time.

Storefronts and commercial projects

We've shipped awning supports to customers in 42 states and Canada, from Michigan and California to Texas, and builders have used them on restaurant storefronts in Texas, Indiana and Florida. See the CAVA project: twelve 1/2" tie rods per location, on the builders' own bracket designs, powder coated and shipped in under three weeks.

We fabricate from your drawings, and custom work is priced like everything on our site, by the pounds of steel and inches of weld, with no charge for customization. Request a quote.

Questions

How far apart should awning supports be, and at what angle?

It depends on the project: the weight of the canopy, how far it projects from the wall, what the wall can carry, and the look you want. Spacing, rod angle and rod diameter should be set by the project's engineer of record or another qualified professional.

Many customers choose a rod angle of about 45°. It's a common balance: steeper rods carry less tension and pull less on the wall, but need a wall bracket mounted much higher above the canopy, while shallower rods sharply increase the forces. At 45°, the wall bracket sits as far above the canopy as the canopy projects from the wall.

It's also the most economical angle. For a given rod, 45° supports the most canopy for each foot of steel you buy: steeper rods need more steel to reach the canopy, and shallower rods need far more tension to hold up the same load. Our designer builds whatever spacing and angle your design calls for, and the rated capacities of our turnbuckles and clevises, along with nominal rod capacities, are on our technical specifications page for your engineer.

What rod size do I need?

That's part of the same engineering decision. We offer 1/2", 3/4" and 1" rods in the designer, and larger custom assemblies up to 2" in diameter.

Can you match brackets I already have, or my architect's design?

Yes. Choose "My own brackets" in the designer and enter the distance between their pins, or send us drawings and we'll build to them.

Do you install?

No. We manufacture and ship the parts; your builder or installer fits them.

Tie rod systems are architectural hardware and are not engineered or load-rated for a particular structure. Have a qualified engineer confirm that a system suits your building before relying on it to carry load.

What is the lead time on orders?

The lead time is displayed in red at the top of the Cart with at least one item in it. That is the best way to see the most up-to-date times. In general, powder coating and welding will add additional time to the standard lead time listed. Lead time is measured from the order placed to when it is shipped from our shop. We unfortunately have no control over independent carrier shipping times. You will get a tracking number as soon as your order is shipped.

What is the status of my order?

If you have not received a tracking number, you can call or email us, and we can provide you with an updated shipping estimate. If your order has shipped, please use the tracking information provided.

What do I do if my order is delivered incomplete or damaged?

We sometimes ship orders in multiple boxes. You will receive a tracking number for each box. Even though we ship all the boxes at the same time, they don’t always show up on the same day. Please verify the tracking information for each box.

Unfortunately, there are times when orders do get lost or damaged during shipping. Please contact us with the tracking number, and we will assist you in resolving the issue. If there is damage, pictures of the damage and as much detail as you can provide will help us when we are filing a claim with the shipping company on your behalf.

Do you do custom orders?

Yes! We love designing the perfect item for our customers' unique needs. We do not charge for customization; we just charge for the cost of the steel. Use the contact form below or send an email to quotes@timberplates.com for a customized quote. Please be sure to include:

  • Your name
  • Phone number
  • Any designs or drawings you have
  • Steel thickness
  • Whether you would like powder coating
  • The shipping address

We can take it from there.

Do you ship to Canada?

We ship to Canada, but customs fees and tariffs are added to the order cost.

Do you offer galvanizing?

Yes! We do offer galvanizing. Please give us a call, and we can give you a quote. Please note that galvanizing adds substantially to lead times. Please plan accordingly.

What grade of steel do you use?

We use industry-standard A36 plate. If you need a custom grade of steel, please call for a quote.

Which collection should I use?

In general, the timber width determines the collection you choose. We usually recommend leaving a wood "reveal" around the plates rather than having the plates go right to the edge of the wood. Also, please be aware that “dimensional lumber” is specified in nominal dimensions. For example, a 4 x 4 dimensional lumber post like you would buy at a big box store is actually 3 ½” x 3 ½”, so our 4” wide Taiga plates would actually extend past the edge of the lumber. Rough-sawn lumber is typically specified in actual dimensions, so a rough-sawn 8x8 will be roughly 8" by 8".

If in doubt, call us, and we will work with you to select the best choice for your application.

What steel thickness should I choose?

Purely decorative plates can be 3/16". Plates that are expected to provide structural support should usually be 1/4". Note: Customer takes all responsibility for structural suitability of timber connector plates. A qualified engineer should always be consulted to ensure structural integrity.

Need another thickness? Please contact us for additional options.

How do I add powder coating to an order?

The powder coating option will appear above your cart during the checkout process.

Click the checkbox, and the cost will be added to your cart. It might take a second or two to refresh the screen. To remove powder coating, uncheck the box.

What size are the bolt holes?

The standard hole size of our plates is 11/16” unless otherwise noted. These holes are designed for 5/8" bolts. Our awning and face-mounted brackets default to 1/4" fasteners. If you would like to use a fastener of a different diameter, please contact us. We can usually make that change for free.

What finishing options are available?
  • Unfinished (included) - Mild steel rusts, so expect some superficial rust on your plates. In most cases, you can ignore it and apply your finish right over it, but if you really want, take some steel wool or sandpaper to it and wipe it off.
  • Powder coat (additional cost) - Our matte black powder coat is gorgeous and one of the most durable finishes on the market. This is the preferred option for outdoor applications because of its UV stability. Matte black powder coating can be selected at checkout. Contact us if you need a different color.
  • Galvanized - For outdoor installations in very wet environments or in environments close to the ocean, galvanizing is the best choice for rust resistance. Please contact us for a quote if you need your parts galvanized.
Can I return my order?

Our plates are cut to order, and shipping of heavy steel plates is expensive. As such, we are regrettably not able to accept returns. Please review your order carefully before you place it. If you are even remotely unsure, consider making mockups out of cardboard or typing paper. All of our plates have detailed images that you can zoom in on and get accurate dimensions.

If all else fails, call us, and we can help you pick the right plates. We love helping customers on their projects.
