Joist Hangers
Face-Mount Joist Hanger for 2x4 to 10x12 Joists
A face-mount joist hanger carries the end of a joist or beam where it meets a header, a ledger, or a wall at a right angle. Its two mounting flanges turn outward and bolt to the face of the header, in plain view. Set your joist's size below, and it's made to fit. Also called an external flange joist hanger.
Made to order: ships in 14–16 business days.

01 Details
How a face-mount hanger goes in
Set the hanger against the header and fasten through its two mounting flanges. Lower the joist into the pocket, then fasten through the side flanges into the joist. Nothing is cut into the joist, and every fastener can be reached from the outside.
Face-mount or concealed
The two hangers differ in where the mounting flanges go. On this one they turn outward and show on both sides of the joist, which makes it the easier one to install. The concealed joist hanger turns them inward, behind the joist's end, where they can't be seen but the joist has to be grooved to clear the bolts.
Sizes this hanger is made in
- Joist width: 1 1/2" to 10". The configurator calls it the width of beam.
- Hanger height: 3 1/2" to 12".
- Mounting flanges, on the header: 1 1/2" to 3" wide each.
- Beam flanges, along the joist's sides: 2 1/2" to 5" wide.
- Fasteners: 1/4" to 5/8".
- Corners: square, or clipped 1/2" on the mounting flanges.
- Saddle, the seat under the joist: straight, or angled into the joist at the bottom.
That spans joists and beams from 2x4 to 10x12. The pocket is 1/16" wider than the joist you enter, so the joist drops in. Leave room on the header for the flanges: a 4" joist with 2" mounting flanges makes a hanger about 8 1/2" wide. The configurator opens on that hanger, 7" tall, with 3/8" fasteners.
Holes on the flanges
Every flange has a hole near its top and one near its bottom. A hanger over 6" tall gets a third, halfway up. That's 8 fasteners on a hanger up to 6" tall, and 12 on a taller one. On the beam flanges the holes are 1" back from the free edge. On the mounting flanges they are 1" in from the outer edge, or centered when the flange is under 2" wide.
This configurator has no spacing rule to hold you to: any combination inside the ranges can be built. Whether that many fasteners suits your load is a question for your engineer.
Questions
Can I use lag screws or structural screws?
The holes are cut for the diameter you pick, so choose your fastener first and enter its size. The kind of fastener, its length, and how many your loads need are for your engineer or your building official to say.
Can the joist meet the header at a skew or a slope?
Not in the configurator, which makes square hangers only. For a skewed or sloped hanger, or a joist outside these sizes, send a sketch through the quote form and we'll draw it up for free.
What do the clipped corners and the angled saddle do?
Both are for looks. Clipped corners take 1/2" off the outer corners of the mounting flanges. The angled saddle runs 3/4" farther under the joist and tapers the bottom of the beam flanges to meet it.
The basics
- 3/16" A36 steel plate, laser cut and welded in our ISO 9001 shop in Texas.
- Holes are cut 1/16" larger than the fastener you choose. Fasteners aren't included.
- Enter your timber's real size, not its name. How to measure a timber.
- Bare steel, or matte black powder coat added in the cart.
