What a plate washer is for
A plate washer goes under a nut or a bolt head where it bears on timber, in place of a small flat washer: on the ends of a tie rod, under the nuts of a through-bolt, or wherever a heavier, larger washer suits the look. Behind the nut of a tie rod through a wall, a large plate washer works as a pattress plate; the engineer of record approves any wall tie. Pick its shape and size, the rod or bolt it's for, and its corners, and the designer draws it and prices it as you go.
Sizes this designer makes
- Shape: square, rectangle, or round.
- Size: 2" to 12" wide, and for a rectangle 2" to 12" tall; a round washer 2" to 12" across.
- Hole: for a 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 7/8", or 1" rod or bolt, cut 1/16" larger.
- Corners: square, clipped, or rounded.
- Thickness: 3/16", 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" A36 steel.
The designer opens on a 4" square washer for a 3/4" rod, with square corners, in 3/8" steel, ten of them. Change any of it.
How it's priced
By weight: the steel in your washer, less its hole, with shipping in the lower 48 built in. There's no charge for design or setup. The price changes as you change the washer, and the price you see is the price you pay. Washers under $10 each are sold ten or more at a time, unless your order comes to more than $75; the designer tells you when that applies.
Questions
Plate washer or flat washer?
A flat washer is a thin stamped ring sized to its bolt. A plate washer is cut from steel plate 3/16" to 1/2" thick and can be several inches across, so it covers more of the timber under the nut and reads as a deliberate part of the joint.
Which thickness should I choose?
Thicker washers are heavier and stiffer. Our washers are architectural hardware, not engineered or load-rated: if a washer is part of how your structure carries load, as on a wall tie, your engineer decides whether it's suitable and how thick it should be.
