05 Flat plates

T and corner plates

Flat plates bolted over a post and the beam it carries: a T where the beam runs past the post, a corner where it ends there. As post brackets they cost less than a post cap, being flat steel with no welding, and they look like the truss plates on the rest of a frame. But the post and beam must be the same width, so their faces are flush where the plate lies across both; each joint takes a plate on each face, bolted through both timbers; and nothing wraps the beam or seats it on the post. A post cap is one welded piece made to the post and the beam each, a narrower post under a wider beam included. More shapes are on the plates page.

12" at this scale. Drawn from the Taiga collection’s cutting files.

06 Planning

By timber size

Every connector here is made to the size your timber really is, 4x4 to 12x12, surfaced or rough-sawn. A surfaced 6x6 is 5-1/2" square; a rough-sawn one is a full 6". The connector guide lists nominal, surfaced, and rough-sawn sizes side by side: how to measure a timber.

Knee braces

A knee brace runs at an angle from a post up to the beam it helps carry. We make the plates or brackets for its ends by quote: send the post and beam sizes and the brace's angle through the quote form, and we'll draw them with you, at no charge for the design.

Pergolas and pavilions

A pergola or pavilion in 6x6 to 12x12 timbers takes the same connectors: post bases on the slab, post caps under the beams, and joist hangers or angle brackets for the rafters. These cost more than hardware-store brackets because they're 3/16" and 1/4" steel plate rather than 12-gauge sheet, cut and welded to your timbers' real size with holes for through-bolts, which is what keeps them in proportion on big timbers.

07 Questions

Questions about timber connectors

Are these rated for loads?

No. Our connectors are architectural hardware, not engineered or load-rated. Makers such as Simpson Strong-Tie publish code-evaluated loads for their stock connectors; ours are made to your timbers for the fit and the look, and your engineer decides where one can carry load.

What steel and finish are they?

A36 steel plate: 3/16" for the post caps, post bases, and joist hangers, and 1/4" for the angle brackets. Bare steel, or matte black powder coat added in the cart. Galvanizing is by quote.

Are bolts included?

No. Holes are cut 1/16" larger than the fastener you choose in the configurator, and the timber connector guide explains the choices.

What if my timbers are bigger?

The configurators take 4x4 to 12x12 timbers. For bigger timbers, or a joint none of them covers, send your sizes or drawings through the quote form. There's no charge for design.

When will my connectors ship?

Every connector is cut and welded to order in our shop in Texas, and the current lead time shows in your cart before you check out. Shipping is free in the lower 48 states.
