Thickness

3/16" steel is a good choice for purely decorative plates. 1/4" is better for applications that need structural support.

About the VT8

The VT8 plate is useful for connecting truss bottom chords to top chords where the bottom chord hangs from the top chord (as in collar ties/tie beams).
